Our Horses

Horses Costa Rica
Our horses are very gentle and suited for all levels of riding skills – from absolute beginners and children to experienced riders. We provide riding helmets for all, and we have smaller saddles for children. We seek to match a horse’s temperament and other characteristics to the rider’s experience. Our horses are Criollos – a typical Costa Rican breed, which are well-adapted to the tropical climate. Criollos are a bit smaller than Arabians so the weight limit for the riders is 180 pounds.

Itinerary

Our horse tours start and finish at Star Mountain Jungle Lodge, 2 km uphill from Mal Pais. Our experienced, Spanish-speaking guide will be your shepherd along the way. From our horse corral, you set out on a trail through pastureland and the rolling hills of Mal Pais where you can absorb the tranquility and bucolic scenery of the Costa Rican countryside. The tour then descends to the beach in Mal Pais with its dramatic rock formations and deserted beaches. Finally, the horses turn onto the road to Cabuya, riding through a lush jungle canyon back to Star Mountain Jungle Lodge. Our horses amble at an easy pace to afford the rider the opportunity to experience and soak in the beauty of Costa Rica’s bountiful rainforest.
