About Star Mountain and Cabo Blanco

Adjacent to our property is the nature reserve Cabo Blanco which was founded in 1963 as the first national park in Costa Rica. The hills of Cabo Blanco, on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, are a transition zone from humid to dry forest. They present a large variety of mixed evergreen and dry forest species. Only 15% of the reserve is primary forest, the rest had once been pasture land which has reverted back to a jungle. Same as the Cabo Blanco reserve, most of the 90 hectare property of Star Mountain had once been a cattle ranch. In 1986 a US-American couple bought the land and turned it into a private reserve and eco lodge. It was one of the first hotels which were built in the Mal Pais and Santa Teresa area. Today Star Mountain contains a mosaic of jungle, rolling hills, creeks and open areas which offers guests of the hotel great bird watching and nature experiences.
